Will a paper clip float in water?

We used a paper towel and a paper clip and placed it in a cup of water. The paper clip floated because the pieces of water joined together. We tried it again using fairy liquid and here is what happened... the paper clip sank to the bottom of the cup because the pieces of water broke apart.
